After the non-stop crowds and chaos of New Year’s Eve, Day 2 was exactly what we needed: slowness, warmth, and a glimpse of real life in China.
We started the morning exploring around our hotel when we met 叶爷爷 (Ye) —a kind, older gentleman with a camera in hand. He was out photographing the city and greeted us with the warmest smile, even offering to take a photo of us together. It was a reminder that even in a big city, small moments with strangers can leave a mark.
ZhuJiajiao Water Town: A Peaceful Escape Just 1 Hour from Shanghai
Located about an hour from Shanghai’s city centre, Zhujiajiao (朱家角) is one of China’s best-preserved ancient water towns. The journey there via metro was seamless, and stepping off the train felt like walking into a completely different world.
Instead of entering through the tourist-heavy main gate, we wandered in through a quieter back path—where the locals live. That’s when we stumbled upon a cozy café run by a sweet local owner. She invited us in for afternoon tea, and for just 78 RMB($11), we enjoyed a coffee and dessert of our choice.
It was calm, intimate, and a world away from the lights of the Bund.
Boats, Bridges & Manifestations
We eventually made our way into the heart of ZhuJiajiao Water Town, where small boats drifted through narrow canals, bridges connected ancient stone paths, and local shops lined the water. It was like stepping into a postcard.
One unexpected gem? A little drink stand selling beverages with manifestation messages printed on them. Yes—you could literally sip your way to positive vibes.
We wandered, soaked in the golden hour, and watched the sun slowly set behind the tiled roofs of this magical water town.
Back to the City, But Different
We took the metro back to our hotel after dark, hearts full and feet tired. But something shifted. The energy we felt in ZhuJiajiao followed us back. It reminded us that travel isn’t always about seeing more—it’s about feeling more.
