City Balcony Hangzhou (城市阳台): Best Place to Watch the Qianjiang New City Light Show
If you're visiting Hangzhou, City Balcony (城市阳台) is one place I definitely recommend adding to your itinerary.
Especially at night.
This is one of the best places to see the modern side of Hangzhou — completely different from West Lake, Lingyin Temple and the traditional parts of the city.
And most importantly:
This is one of the best places to watch the 钱江新城 Qianjiang New City Light Show.
If you have one free evening in Hangzhou, I'd come here.
What Is City Balcony 城市阳台?
City Balcony sits along the Qiantang River in Qianjiang New City (钱江新城), Hangzhou's modern CBD.
It's basically a huge riverside viewing platform where you can walk around, enjoy the river and look across Hangzhou's modern skyline.
During the daytime, it's already a nice place for a walk.
But I'd personally come:
around sunset → stay until the light show.
Once everything starts lighting up, the whole area feels completely different.

This is the main reason I'd recommend City Balcony.
At night, the skyscrapers around Qianjiang New City become part of a huge synchronized building light show.
Instead of one screen or one building lighting up, the surrounding skyline becomes part of the show.
City Balcony is officially recommended as a viewing location for the Qianjiang New City light show, with its riverside platform giving you a close view of the illuminated buildings.
It really shows you another side of Hangzhou.
During the day:
temples + mountains + West Lake
At night:
skyscrapers + lights + Qiantang River

Current Summer Schedule
As of August 2026, the current summer schedule runs through September 30, 2026:
First show: 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Second show: 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Every night
The updated schedule was announced in July 2026 specifically for the Qianjiang New City light-show area.
I'd recommend arriving before 7:00 PM
That gives you time to find the viewing area, walk around and get a good spot before the first show begins.
Important
Hangzhou changes its lighting schedules depending on the season, holidays, weather and special events.
So if you're reading this after September 2026, check the latest schedule before visiting.
Special festivals can also have additional themed shows and different times.
Best Place to Watch the Light Show
For a close, immersive view:
City Balcony 城市阳台
This is where I'd recommend most tourists go.
You're surrounded by the Qianjiang New City skyline and can see the lights across the buildings around you.
For a wider panoramic view of the entire skyline, official Hangzhou guidance also recommends watching from the south side of the Qiantang River around the Olympic Sports Center / Qianjiang Century City area.
But if it's your first time:
just go to City Balcony.
It's easy and the experience is already great.
How to Get to City Balcony Hangzhou
Taking the metro is probably the easiest option.
Take:
Hangzhou Metro Line 4 or Line 7
to:
Citizen Center Station 市民中心站
From there, it's approximately an 8-minute walk to City Balcony.
Just search:
城市阳台
in your map app once you arrive.
How Long Should You Spend Here?
I'd allow roughly:
1.5–2 hours
if you're coming specifically for the night view and light show.
You don't need an entire afternoon here.
That's why City Balcony works really well as your evening activity after spending the daytime exploring Hangzhou.
City Balcony Shows a Completely Different Hangzhou
This is actually why I think City Balcony is a must-do.
When people imagine Hangzhou, they normally think about:
West Lake
Lingyin Temple
mountains
pagodas
traditional Jiangnan scenery
And that's definitely part of Hangzhou.
But then you come to Qianjiang New City at night and suddenly you're looking at this huge futuristic skyline along the Qiantang River.
It's such a contrast.
That's why I'd recommend experiencing both sides of Hangzhou.
Is City Balcony Hangzhou Worth Visiting?
Yes — especially at night.
I wouldn't necessarily prioritise City Balcony over Lingyin Temple or West Lake if you have very limited time.
But if you're staying overnight in Hangzhou, this is exactly what I'd do in the evening.
Come before sunset.
Walk along the Qiantang River.
Wait for the skyline to light up.
Then watch the 钱江新城 light show.
It's an easy way to end your day in Hangzhou.
