West Lake Hangzhou: Our Hand-Rowed Boat Experience (西湖手摇船)
You can't really visit Hangzhou without visiting West Lake (西湖).
But instead of only walking around the lake, one experience I definitely recommend is taking a traditional:
西湖手摇船 — West Lake hand-rowed boat.
We took one of the popular scenic routes around West Lake for around two hours, slowly travelling through quieter parts of the lake while a boatman rowed us along.
And honestly, this is probably one of the nicest ways to experience West Lake.
What Is a hand-rowed boat (手摇船)?
These are traditional wooden boats manually rowed by a local boatman.
They're much smaller and more private than the large sightseeing boats you'll also see around West Lake.
Instead of sitting together with a huge group of tourists, you're basically travelling around West Lake on your own little boat.
A typical boat can fit around:
4–6 people
so if you're travelling as a family or small group, you can share the cost.
For us, there were only two people, so it was basically a private boat ride. 😂
How Much Is the West Lake Hand-Rowed Boat?
When we visited, the price was:

¥150 per hour / per boat
We chose the longer route:
2 hours = ¥300
Because the boat can accommodate around 4–6 passengers, it can actually become quite affordable if you're travelling with friends or family.
For example:
4 people → ¥75 each for two hours
6 people → ¥50 each for two hours
For a private scenic boat experience around West Lake, I think that's pretty reasonable.
Prices and routes can change, so confirm the fare and duration with the boatman before starting your ride.
We Took the Popular 「乌龟潭」网红路线
We chose one of the popular scenic hand-rowed boat routes around West Lake.
And this is where the smaller boats have an advantage.
You aren't only travelling across the huge open lake.
The boat can take you through smaller waterways, bridges, willow trees and quieter areas around West Lake that feel completely different from the busiest tourist sections.
The whole experience is much slower.
No rushing.
No traffic.
You're basically just sitting there while the boatman rows through the scenery.
Two Hours Was Just Nice for Us
You can technically take the boat for only one hour.
But we chose:
2 hours / ¥300
and personally, I think that was a good amount of time.
One hour would give you a taste of the experience, but two hours lets you travel further and actually relax instead of constantly thinking about when the ride is going to end.
West Lake is huge, so there is plenty to see.
If your itinerary isn't rushed, I'd choose the longer route again.
Why I Prefer This Over Only Walking Around West Lake
You should still walk around West Lake.
There are plenty of beautiful areas along the shore.
But being on the water gives you a completely different perspective.
You get:
mountains in the distance
willow trees hanging over the water
traditional bridges
pagodas
small waterways
and other boats slowly passing by.
West Lake's landscape is also culturally significant enough that UNESCO designated the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou as a World Heritage Site in 2011.
But you don't really need to know all the history to enjoy it.
Sometimes you just sit on the boat and look around.
That's enough.
Is the West Lake Hand-Rowed Boat Worth It?
For us:
Definitely yes.
Especially if you're travelling as a couple, family or small group.
You're already coming to West Lake anyway.
Instead of only taking photos from the shore, spend an hour or two actually travelling across it.
Our experience was:
¥150/hour
¥300 for two hours
4–6 people maximum per boat
and a slow scenic ride through West Lake.
Simple.
But probably one of the most memorable things we did in Hangzhou.

It's a lot of walking, but you get to experience both Hangzhou's mountains and temples before ending around West Lake.
And after walking around all day...
sitting on a boat for two hours suddenly sounds pretty good. 😂
