Wulumuqi Middle Road Shanghai (乌鲁木齐中路): Small Street, Lots of Hidden Gems

If you're doing a Shanghai citywalk, don't skip Wulumuqi Middle Road (乌鲁木齐中路).


It's not a huge street, but this small stretch has a surprising number of interesting shops, cafés and little places worth stopping for.


We came here after Anfu Road, then continued towards Huaihai Middle Road.


For me, it's one of those streets that's perfect as part of a walking route rather than a standalone destination.



What Is Wulumuqi Middle Road Like?


Wulumuqi Middle Road feels much more neighbourhood-like compared with Shanghai's major shopping streets.


You'll find:

  • Small boutique stores

  • Cafés

  • Lifestyle shops

  • Independent brands

  • Restaurants

  • Little hidden storefronts


The fun is really just walking slowly and seeing what you find.

Stop by Tagi


One of the famous stores we found here was Tagi.


It's exactly the kind of place that makes this street worth exploring — small, stylish and easy to miss if you're rushing.


There are also plenty of boutique shops around the area, so if you enjoy finding smaller independent stores instead of only major international brands, definitely take your time here.

Part of the Perfect Shanghai Citywalk


I wouldn't plan Wulumuqi Middle Road as a separate half-day attraction.

Instead, combine it with the surrounding streets.


Our route was basically:

Wukang Road 武康路

↓

Anfu Road 安福路

↓

Wulumuqi Middle Road 乌鲁木齐中路

↓

Huaihai Middle Road 淮海中路


This is one of my favourite ways to experience Shanghai.


You're not constantly taking the metro from one landmark to another.


You're just walking through neighbourhoods, discovering cafés, shops and interesting streets along the way.



Continue to Huaihai Middle Road


After exploring Wulumuqi Middle Road, continue towards Huaihai Middle Road.


That's where the citywalk starts transitioning from smaller boutiques and neighbourhood streets into one of Shanghai's major shopping areas.


So you get two completely different sides of Shanghai within one walk.




How Long Do You Need?


Around 30 minutes to 1 hour is enough if you're just walking through.


But if you stop for coffee, shop around or find somewhere interesting to eat, you could easily spend longer.


There's no need to rush.




Is Wulumuqi Middle Road Worth Visiting?


Yes — if you're already doing the Wukang Road and Anfu Road area.


I wouldn't necessarily travel across Shanghai specifically for this one street.


But as part of a citywalk?


Definitely include it.


It's small, but packed with enough cafés, boutiques and hidden gems to make the walk much more interesting.


And from here, just continue towards Huaihai Middle Road.
