Nanmen Shuanrou Beijing (南门涮肉): A Must-Try Beijing Hotpot

If you're looking for what to eat in Beijing, one place I'd definitely recommend is Nanmen Shuanrou (南门涮肉).
This is traditional Old Beijing copper-pot hotpot — 铜锅涮肉.
Instead of the spicy, heavy broth you might associate with Sichuan hotpot, Beijing-style shuanrou uses a much lighter broth. You cook thin slices of lamb in the boiling pot and dip them into a rich sesame-based sauce.
Simple, warm and really good.
And surprisingly, it wasn't expensive either.
What Is Nanmen Shuanrou?
Nanmen Shuanrou is one of Beijing's well-known restaurants for traditional 涮羊肉 — instant-boiled mutton.
The restaurant dates back to 1994. Its original location was near the south gate of the Temple of Heaven, which is where the name “Nanmen” — South Gate — came from.
The traditional Beijing style uses a copper pot with a light broth, allowing the flavour of the lamb itself to stand out instead of being covered by a strongly flavoured soup.
If you've never tried Beijing-style hotpot before, this is a good place to start.
We Went to the Beiwa Road Branch 北洼路店
We visited the 南门涮肉 Beiwa Road branch (北洼路店) in Haidian.
And the best part?
There was no line. 😂
Some famous Beijing restaurants can have crazy queues, so finding a branch where we could basically just walk in made the experience much easier.
The branch we visited is on Beiwa Road (北洼路), so if you're not specifically trying to visit the original or most famous location, it's worth checking other branches around Beijing too.

What Is Beijing Shuanrou Like?
The centre of the table is the traditional tall copper hotpot.
Once the broth is boiling, you take slices of lamb and quickly cook them inside.
Then:
Lamb → hotpot → sesame sauce → eat.
That's basically the experience.
Because the broth itself is light, a lot of the flavour comes from the quality of the lamb and the dipping sauce.
Nanmen Shuanrou is especially known for its lamb and traditional sesame-based dipping sauce.
If you're visiting Beijing during colder weather, it's even better.
There's something about sitting around a steaming copper pot while it's cold outside that just feels very Beijing.
How Much Did We Spend?
This was another pleasant surprise.
For the two of us, our meal came to around:
¥120+ for two people
which was roughly:
RM70+
We're both relatively light eaters, so obviously your bill could be higher depending on how much meat and how many side dishes you order.
But for us, it felt very affordable for a famous Beijing restaurant.
You don't need to spend hundreds of RMB just to try a proper Beijing-style hotpot.
What Should You Order?
The main thing you're coming here for is obviously:
涮羊肉 — Shuan Yang Rou
Thinly sliced lamb cooked in the copper pot.
I'd make this the centre of the meal and then add vegetables, tofu or other side dishes depending on what you like.
And definitely try it with their famous sesame sauce.
You don't need to over-order either.
You can always add more plates of meat later.
Is Nanmen Shuanrou Worth Visiting?
Yes.
Especially if you've never tried traditional Beijing copper-pot hotpot before.
When people think about food in Beijing, Peking roast duck usually gets all the attention.
And yes, you should eat that too.
But I'd put 铜锅涮肉 on the list as another classic Beijing food experience.
Our visit was simple:
No queue.
Around ¥120+ for two.
Warm copper-pot hotpot.
Good lamb.
And we'd definitely eat it again.
If you're building a Beijing food itinerary, I'd recommend trying Nanmen Shuanrou at least once.
