No trip to Beijing is complete without a visit to the Great Wall of China—and today, we did just that.

We chose the Mutianyu section, located about 1.5 to 2 hours from the city. It's less crowded than Badaling, offers breathtaking views, and is one of the most well-preserved parts of the wall. If it’s your first time, this is the perfect choice.

Getting to the Great Wall of China

We booked a roundtrip transfer online from Trip.com, and arrived by early morning. To save our energy for the actual hike, we took the cable car up to the wall—and wow, that first panoramic view was surreal.

The Wall winds endlessly across the mountains like a dragon resting on the ridge. It’s a humbling sight.

The Climb: Steep but Worth Every Step

Mutianyu is known for its steep sections—and yes, they’re real. Some parts had us climbing like it was leg day at the gym, but the view at each watchtower just kept getting better.

There's something spiritual about walking the same stones emperors and soldiers once did. You feel the weight of time here.

Tips for Visiting Mutianyu

  • Wear proper shoes—grip matters here

  • Bring water and snacks—especially in colder months

  • Take your time—there’s no need to rush; it’s about the experience

  • Don’t miss the toboggan ride down (optional, but fun if it’s open!)
