Mutianyu Great Wall of China, Beijing

When visiting Beijing, the Great Wall of China is a must. While Badaling is the most famous section, it’s often packed with tourists. That’s why many travelers prefer Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城) — a scenic, well-preserved, and less crowded stretch just 1.5 hours from Beijing.

Known for its lush greenery, stunning mountain views, and restored watchtowers, Mutianyu offers the perfect mix of history, beauty, and adventure.

Why Visit Mutianyu Instead of Badaling?

  • Fewer Crowds – More space to enjoy the views and take photos.

  • Better Scenery – Surrounded by dense forest, especially beautiful in spring and autumn.

  • Fun Transport Options – Choose between a cable car or a toboggan ride down the wall!

  • Family-Friendly – Easier walking paths compared to steeper sections like Jiankou.

How to Get to Mutianyu Great Wall

  • Distance: About 70 km from Beijing (1.5–2 hours drive).

  • By Bus/Minibus: Book a Tour Bus on Trip.com depart (from Dengshikou Station)

  • By Car/Private Tour: Recommended for flexibility, especially if you want to combine with nearby sights.

Mutianyu Great Wall China Entrance

Tickets & Opening Hours

  • Entrance Fee: ~40 RMB per adult (cable car/toboggan extra).

  • Cable Car & Chairlift: ~100 RMB one-way, ~120 RMB round trip.

  • Opening Hours: 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM (may vary by season).

Best Things to Do at Mutianyu

  1. Ride the Cable Car 🚡

    • Quick way up with panoramic views.

  2. Walk the Wall

    • Explore restored watchtowers, perfect for photos.

  3. Take the Toboggan Down 🛷

    • The most fun way to end your Great Wall visit!

  4. Photography Spots

    • The area around Watchtower 14–20 has the best angles.

Cable Car Tips at Mutianyu

When visiting Mutianyu Great Wall, it’s important to know that the cable car system is divided into two sides:

  • West Side – Usually runs up to around Tower 14.

  • East Side – Brings you closer to Tower 6.

🚨 Important: Tickets for the west and east side cable cars are separate. If you buy a round-trip ticket for one side, it only covers that side — you cannot use it to cross over and return from the other.

Since walking between both sides can take hours and involves steep climbs, the easiest way is to choose one cable car for going up and the same one for coming back. If you want to experience both sides, you’ll need to buy two different tickets.

👉 Our recommendation:If it’s your first time, go with a round-trip ticket for one side (either west or east). It saves your energy and ensures you’ll have more time to enjoy the views instead of hiking long distances just to return.

Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Visit:

    • Spring (Apr–Jun) and Autumn (Sep–Nov) for cooler weather & colors.

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes – Even though it’s restored, expect lots of stairs.

  • Avoid Weekends & Holidays – Can still get crowded with local tourists.

  • Bring Snacks & Water – Limited (and pricey) shops inside.

Final Thoughts

The Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the best ways to experience this world wonder without overwhelming crowds. Whether you ride the cable car, hike between watchtowers, or slide down the toboggan, Mutianyu gives you an unforgettable memory of China’s most iconic landmark.

If you’re planning a trip to Beijing, this section of the Great Wall should definitely be on your itinerary.
