The Temple of Heaven (天坛, Tiantan) is one of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks, attracting millions of visitors each year. Built during the Ming Dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage site was where emperors prayed for good harvests, making it both a spiritual and architectural masterpiece. With its stunning blue-roofed Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and peaceful surrounding gardens, the Temple of Heaven is a must-visit for anyone exploring Beijing. In this guide, we’ll share what to expect, how to get tickets, and useful travel tips.

Why Visit the Temple of Heaven?

  • Historical Significance: It was used by emperors of both the Ming and Qing Dynasties for annual ceremonies.

  • Architectural Beauty: The circular design of the Hall of Prayer symbolizes heaven, while the square base represents earth — reflecting ancient Chinese cosmology.

  • Local Culture: The surrounding park is a gathering place for locals practicing tai chi, dancing, or playing traditional instruments.
