Hangzhou Drum Tower (鼓楼): Historic Landmark Near Hefang Street
If you're already walking through Hefang Street (河坊街) and Dajing Alley (大井巷), keep going until you reach Hangzhou Drum Tower (鼓楼).
This is a really easy landmark to include because it sits right at the end of that old-town walking route.
What Is Hangzhou Drum Tower?
Hangzhou Drum Tower, or 鼓楼, is a historic gate tower in the old city area of Hangzhou.
The site has a long history and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, so what you see today is a restored version rather than the original ancient structure.
Even so, it still works as one of the most recognizable landmarks around the Qinghefang historic district.
Why Visit Drum Tower?
Honestly, I wouldn't come all the way across Hangzhou just for Drum Tower alone.
But if you're already exploring:
Nan Song Yu Jie 南宋御街
Hefang Street 河坊街
Dajing Alley 大井巷
then Drum Tower becomes the perfect final stop.
It's one of those attractions that makes more sense as part of a walking route than as a standalone half-day destination.
The Best Route
This is the route I'd recommend:
Nan Song Yu Jie
↓
Hefang Street
↓
Dajing Alley
↓
Hangzhou Drum Tower
It's simple, walkable and gives you a nice look at the historic side of Hangzhou.
You can stop for snacks, take photos and just slowly move through the old streets.
Dajing Alley Leads Straight Here
One of the reasons I like this route is how naturally everything connects.
From Dajing Alley, just keep walking south and you'll eventually arrive around the Drum Tower area.
So after taking photos at the famous Hangzhou wall in Dajing Alley, you can continue directly toward 鼓楼 instead of backtracking.
When Should You Visit?
Late afternoon into evening works really well.
During the day, it's easier to appreciate the architecture.
At night, the surrounding old streets feel more atmospheric with the lights and shop signs turned on.
Then dinner nearby – Sizhaoer (Delicious Braised Pork Rice in Hangzhou)
Is Hangzhou Drum Tower Worth Visiting?
Yes — if you're already in the area.
I wouldn't rank it above West Lake, Lingyin Temple or Faxi Temple for a first Hangzhou trip. But as part of the old-city walking route, it's absolutely worth adding.
It's quick.
It's photogenic.
And it gives your walk a nice endpoint.
Plus, there's a famous braised pork restaurant nearby that you must try, it's called Sizhaoer (Read more here).
