If you're a Malaysian planning a trip to China, here's the simple answer:
No — Malaysians do not need a visa to visit China for short trips.
Malaysian ordinary passport holders can currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days per visit.
I've travelled to China multiple times over the past year, and the visa-free arrangement has made traveling there incredibly easy.
Shanghai.
Beijing.
Hangzhou.
Yunnan.
Harbin.
No tourist visa application before each short trip.
Just plan the trip, book the flight and go. 😂
How Long Can Malaysians Stay in China Without a Visa?
This is where the rules sometimes get misunderstood.
Malaysians can stay:
Up to 30 days per entry
with a maximum total visa-free stay of:
90 days within any 180-day period.
So this does not mean you can enter China and stay continuously for 90 days.
The rule is:
Maximum 30 days each visit
and
Maximum 90 visa-free days across any rolling 180-day period.
Example
You could potentially make several trips to China within six months.
For example:
Trip 1: 10 days
Trip 2: 20 days
Trip 3: 15 days
Total:
45 visa-free days
You're still below the 90-day cumulative limit.
However, each individual visa-free visit cannot normally exceed 30 days.
Is China Visa-Free for Malaysians in 2026?
Yes.
The China – Malaysia Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement officially came into force on 17 July 2025.
Under the agreement, Malaysian citizens holding ordinary passports can travel to China without applying for a visa in advance for eligible short-term visits.
Unlike the earlier temporary visa-free arrangements, this is based on a bilateral mutual visa-exemption agreementbetween Malaysia and China.
What Can Malaysians Visit China Visa-Free For?
The agreement covers short visits for purposes including:
Tourism
Visiting family and friends
Exchanges
Private affairs
Medical treatment
International transport/crew purposes
For most readers planning a holiday:
Yes, normal tourism is covered.
When Do Malaysians Still Need a China Visa?
You still need an appropriate visa if you plan to:
stay longer than 30 days
or travel to China for activities requiring prior approval, such as:
employment
study
media activities
or long-term residence.
So if you're simply going to Shanghai for five days, Beijing for a week or travelling around China for two weeks:
No tourist visa required.
If you're moving there for work or studying for several months:
Different rules apply.
Do I Need to Apply for Anything Before Flying?
For an ordinary short visa-free holiday, you do not need to apply for a Chinese tourist visa beforehand.
However, I always recommend travelling with the usual documents you'd want for any international trip:
Valid Malaysian passport
Accommodation details
Return/onward flight information
Basic itinerary
China's immigration authorities can still verify that you meet the conditions for visa-free entry.
Can Malaysians Enter China Visa-Free Multiple Times?
Yes.
There is currently no fixed limit on the number of visa-free entries.
The important restriction is the number of days.
Your combined visa-free stays cannot exceed:
90 days within any 180-day period.
This is particularly useful if you're like me and somehow keep ending up back in China every few months. 😂
How Are the 90 Days Calculated?
China uses a rolling 180-day period.
Immigration looks backwards 180 days from the relevant date and calculates how many days you've already spent in China under the visa-free arrangement.
If you've already accumulated 90 visa-free days during that period, you won't qualify for another visa-free entry until enough previous days fall outside the 180-day window.
For the average Malaysian taking one or two holidays to China per year, this probably won't be something you need to worry about.
But frequent travellers should keep track.
Is Travelling to China From Malaysia Easy Now?
Honestly?
Very.
Removing the need to apply for a tourist visa makes spontaneous China trips much easier.
And once you're there, travelling around the country is surprisingly convenient too.
One thing I strongly recommend setting up before you fly is:
Alipay.
China is incredibly cashless.
Across my trips — even when travelling through more rural parts of Yunnan — we've been able to use Alipay for everyday purchases.

What About Public Transportation?
Also easy.
For example, in Shanghai we used Alipay to generate our metro QR code, scanned into the station and scanned again when leaving.
We've also used public buses in Hangzhou through transport services inside Alipay.
So if you're worried that travelling independently around China will be complicated, I honestly found the opposite once everything was set up.

For a normal holiday in 2026:
No.
Malaysian ordinary passport holders can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days per entry, subject to a maximum of 90 visa-free days within any 180-day period.
That's enough for most China trips.
